WipEout Pure

September 06, 2005 ・ Blog

WipEout Pure, all gleaming chrome and neon, and the PSP, all flashing screen and glossy black carapace, are styled like they come from some tech-utopian future. It’s an aesthetic that gloriously infects the sensation of your first race.

In a world of modern racing games that give more of a sense that you are evenly and fairly matched against your fellow racers, Pure feels anachronistic and frustrating, as if it uses cheap tactics to force you to face the often randomly acute dangers of racing in the pack.

Yep, I feel a little mixed about it, but it’s a good game: my first review for Pixelsurgeon. More coming up soon.
